Goats are easy to care for and highly valued family assets.

During 2008, record numbers of Australians gave children, families and communities in need a lot of reasons to smile. Supporters ordered thousands of life-changing gifts valued at just under $4 million. These included:

  • 4,138 contributions to provide beehives and skills training to help families generate valuable income.
  • 1,183 donkeys to carry heavy burdens and help generate income for families.
  • 5,800 contributions to provide clean water for communities and help reduce waterborne diseases.
  • 7,489 contributions of nourishing food for families in emergency situations.
  • 1,200 emergency kits for families affected by crises such as floods, earthquake or conflict.
  • 2,708 gifts of fruit tree seedlings and agricultural training to provide families with food to eat and produce to sell.
  • 5,475 goats to produce protein-rich milk.
  • 125 house construction kits to help rebuild homes for families who have lost everything to civil wars or natural disasters.
  • 3,214 contributions to support HIV and AIDS programs.
  • 11,033 gifts of immunisation to protect over 165,000 children from life-threatening diseases.
  • 1,794 contributions to help build latrines and handwashing stations in schools that have been damaged by war.
  • 6,958 sets of two mosquito nets to protect families from malaria.
  • 4,893 contributions to support reforestation projects.
  • 279 return home kits to enable widows and children affected by war to start over.
  • 2,512 school kits containing school bags, notebooks and pencils.
  • 1,124 school uniforms to enable vulnerable children to face the classroom with confidence.
  • 1,988 sets of sports equipment to promote healthy play.
  • 2,628 contributions to our Twice As Green program to support reforestation projects.
  • 3,590 vegie packs of seeds, tools and training to help families establish vegie gardens.
  • 34 water tanks to help farmers irrigate their crops.
