Don't Trade Lives

Human trafficking: not in our neighbourhood!

Australia has a unique geographic position and political framework that lends itself to taking a strong stance in addressing labour exploitation in our region. The Don’t Trade Lives campaign aims to see Australia lead efforts to end trafficking regionally, ensuring the rights of trafficked people and those vulnerable to trafficking are protected and that perpetrators of trafficking and enslavement face justice.

We all have a part to play in combating human trafficking and slavery. Remind the Australian Government of the steps they can take to fight this injustice. Fill in your name and email address and send the e-card below to the Attorney General, The Hon. Robert McClelland.

Human trafficking: not in our neighbourhood!

Dear Attorney General

Human trafficking is a modern day form of slavery that affects more than 27 million people today.

Almost every country, including Australia, is involved in some way, either as a place of recruitment, of transit or the destination of trafficked people. Unfortunately, it’s often poor and impoverished families who silently pay the highest price, especially in Asia.

I call on the Australian government to combat trafficking and slavery by committing to:

  • Increase funding to NGO anti-trafficking programs in the region
  • Increase funding on protection and prevention interventions, in par with current funding on prosecution
  • Ratify outstanding relevant UN protocols and conventions on human trafficking and child labour and encourage neighbouring governments to do the same
  • Review Australian Government purchasing, including how the existing provisions about ethical procurement are currently being enforced to ensure it does not indirectly participate in exploited labour.
