Human trafficking - the buying and selling of people for the purpose of exploiting their labour - is now the world's third largest transnational crime, behind drugs and arms. It is a crime that is fuelled by the expanding demand of global consumers for cheap goods and services.
In Australia one of the biggest consumers is the Government. In 2007, Australian Government agencies spent 29 billion dollars purchasing goods and services. World Vision is asking the Australian Government to review their procurement supply chain. As a huge consumer of goods, a government review could positively impact labour exploitation in the Asia-Pacific region.
But it's not just in Canberra that change is needed. Your Federal Member of Parliament (MP) can get involved by taking action in your local community as well.
Write your postcode, name and email address in the e-card below to ask your Federal MP to help combat child labour, human trafficking and other forms of labour exploitation.
